Pancreas

Two primary causes of Pancreatitis:

  • Long-term ALCOHOL abuse. About 70% of chronic pancreatitis cases and about 35% of acute pancreatitis cases are linked to excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Gallstones. About 30 percent to 50 percent of people with acute pancreatities have gallstones. These can block the pancreatic duct and the flow of pancreatic juices into the duodenum. Digestive enzymes then become active in the pancreas “digesting” healthy tissue, rather than in the duodenum, where they would normally break down food. Read the rest of this entry »
