MARIKINA CITY – Following FireChat’s Project Agimat launch last Monday, DOST Project NOAH, together with Open Garden, again conducted a meeting with the City’s barangay captains. Its objective was to better realize the vision of the partnership which is to have a continuous flow of information even when communication lines are down during a disaster.
Patterned like a local broadcasting mechanism, FireChat is the first off-the-grid messaging application that enables people to communicate even without internet or a cellular connection. It can be used to stay connected with family, friends, and other people who are part of a community network using Bluetooth technology.
The device is projected to be a very useful communication tool to help mitigate disasters, again Project NOAH being the conduit of this information. The Agimat (or the Greenstone as it was originally called) allows peer-to-peer connections to spread and it enables free messaging anywhere as long as other people also have the same apparatus. It can be utilized by just turning on your smartphone’s WiFi and Bluetooth connections.
“Five percent of the population is enough to create a backup communication system. It is like a messaging application working without internet,” said Marina Azcarate, Open Garden’s head of global marketing.
“It is a solution for real-time disaster management that is affordable and easy to use,” she added.
With this, strategic planning on how to easily disseminate the information about this application’s use and features was further discussed during the meeting. The barangay captains openly shared their insights on how to better present this technology at the grassroots level. Others even suggested that social media platforms should be the main tool to do this effort.
We can all work in averting disasters!
This kind of partnership and innovation helps Project NOAH execute its mission of collaborating with similar institutions or organizations in promoting safety in communities affected by natural hazards. Visit our https://blog.noah.dost.gov.ph to know more about us!
